The Accessible Arts Studio provides after-school arts experiences for children with and without disabilities. Tuesday afternoons students experience two and three-demensional arts. Four new potters' wheels allow an exciting new experience--thanks to the generosity of H&R Block Foundation. Wednesday Arts Club will immerse young people in drama and creative movement. Last year they developed a script for a radio play, which aired on a station in Pittsburg, Kansas. On Thursdays, students will enjoy mixed media arts.
A small gallery adjacent to the Arts Center is a dream in progress. We welcome a site visit, questions and donations for this complement to our arts studio.
Workshops are conducted with teachers, often including their own students. Fees vary depending on circumstances.
Every year, Accessible Arts trains hundreds of teachers and other arts providers in techniques that will help them make the arts more inclusive and rewarding for children with disabilities. Training is provided through individual workshops and through Creating Arts for All.
Training is provided without cost for volunteers working in major programs. For professionals who volunteer their time, the experience of working in the program is itself additional training.
Annually, our programs for and with children with disabilities, usually in an inclusive setting, reach approximately 4,000 Kansas children and youth in 26 school districts and many others from the Kansas City Missouri metropolitan area. Some children spend their first night away from home during 99 Drums. Others have opportunities to participate in ways never opened to them previously. It is common for parents to state that they have never before seen their children come 'out of their shell' and participate with such joy and enthusiasm. Older students' minds are opened to career opportunities never before imagined. And all children experience the arts through inclusive settings as seldom before.
