Access Directory of Cultural Facilities

The eleven-county Kansas City metropolitan population in 2000 was 1,776,062. Of that population ages 15+, approximately 51,000 persons were blind and visually impaired; 53,000 were deaf and hard-of-hearing; and 167,400 had mobility impairments. (Statistics based on Census Bureau Figures 1997 and 2000.)

Cultural venues in metropolitan Kansas City, in cooperation with Accessible Arts, Inc., are now able to offer patrons a comprehensive overview of accessibility to and within their facilities. As a result of accessibility surveys, information can now be reviewed by patrons of the arts as an aid for decisions about where to spend their leisure time. Surveys focus on physical features and on user-friendly accommodations for things such as phones, seating, signage, program notes, and audio/visual aids. Patrons can visit our web site to determine accommodation for disabilities--which enhance the usability for all persons.

The Cultural Access Initiative survey is intended to be a friendly, helpful marketing tool for cultural venues. Site surveys are conducted by teams of three trained surveyors, along with a facility representative. Each team includes one or more persons with disabilities to maximize insight and effectiveness. Following the survey, a report is provided to the facility management and a free listing is provided on this web site and on the National AccessExpressed web site. Cultural facilities wishing to have their site surveyed may contact Accessible Arts, Inc. at 913/281-1133 or by e-mail: accarts@accessiblearts.org
