What: 99 Drums; a weekend of hands-on music and dance workshops exploring the arts, history, customs, and food of West African, Native American, Mexican, and Caribbean cultures.
Why: 99 Drums will bring together a diverse group of children ages 7-16 years old (including at-risk youth, children with disabilities and children without disabilities) to experience music and dance in a celebration of diverse cultures in a safe, inclusive environment.
When: Friday, April 25 – Sunday, April 27, 2003. The weekend will culminate with a free public performance on Sunday afternoon at the Kansas State School for the Blind.
Where: The Kansas State School for the Blind, 1100 State Ave., Kansas City, Kansas.
Who: Children ages 7-16 from across the state of Kansas and the Kansas City metropolitan area will be treated to hands-on workshops and performances by musicians/dancers from the Traditional Music Society, the Pelathe Community Resource Center, and Fiesta Mexicana. Adult volunteers to accompany the children from workshop to workshop are also welcomed.
Cost: The fee is only $35 per child (includes 12 workshops, 6meals, 2 overnight stays and free performances by professional artists). Some scholarships are available on a first-come/first-served basis.
How: 99 Drums is presented by Accessible Arts, Inc., Kansas State School for the Blind the Kansas Arts Commission, KanArts, Fiesta Mexicana, YWCA of Greater Kansas City and Breakfast @ St. Paul's.
